Hiroshima

arch.jpg

This is the most powerful image that hit straight to my heart.
The arch frames the flame that will only be extinguished when the last atom bomb is dismantled on this earth.
The flame stands in a reflecting pond just behind the arch.
Directly behind the pond is the Atomic Dome.
What a powerful sight.

English Class

Frankie, John, and I taught a 12-week Adult English class for the City of Nishinomiya. What a great group of folks.

This was our final class night.
Of course we have to have a traditional "Goodbye Party."
That is mandatory in Japan.
What fun.

Hiroshima Trip

frankienkids2.jpg

Frankie was a great travel companion on this trip.
We took our time walking to Peace Park.
I think we both instinctively knew that we had to approach it gradually.
These kids warmed our hearts and truly helped prepare us with love for the sad and powerful experience of witnessing the devastation that the world's first atomic bomb created.

Another check mark off my "I wanna do this before I die" list.
I left a string of cranes at the Children's Monument to Sadako who died of leukemia, a result of the A-bomb.

This is a monument to the Koreans who died that day.
There are many, many monuments throughout the park.
They are all focused on trying to prevent this from ever happening again.
I pray that all world leaders will visit this park and truly understand the consequences of their escalating war games.

Please click on the link below to read the Peace Declaration written this year by the Mayor of Hiroshima. Every year since the bomb was dropped the Mayor sends a letter to the leaders of the world pleading for peace and the end of nuclear weapons.

Peace Declaration

Out of the ashes has risen a beautiful, positive city.
We were amazed at how our hearts were filled with love and joy even after witnessing the atrocities of the bomb.
Nothing in this city even remotely hints at pity.
The message is loud and clear:
War is obsolete.
We need to rid the earth of atomic weapons before we annihalte ourselves.
